PRELUDE
London, England – 1959
The streets of London are covered in a thick fog, but the oil lamp streetlights are glowing through it – but only revealing a small area around each one. The streets are quiet and look to be deserted. Then a man stepped out of the shadows and steadily walked down the cobblestone street. The man is wearing a long black coat and hat. His face is hidden by the collar of the coat as he walked. He turned and looked at a certain house before continuing up the steps to the door. He clicked the small golden knocker three times and waited. After a few meaningless seconds, the door quickly opened and the interior light reached the dark street. He nonchalantly took a quick look around before slipping inside undetected.
The man quietly walked through the house to a room near the back. As he entered the dimly lit room, he removed his hat. He stood in the doorway and peered down at a woman lying in a bed - she’s giving birth. A few maids and nurses are surrounding her. The man knelt down beside the woman's bed and held her hand in his. After a few minutes of endless agony – a baby's cry echoes through the room – making it the only sound in the entire house. The nurses cleaned off the baby and handed it over to the mother – it's a boy. She held the baby as the mysterious man looked as though he were studying the child. The nurses left the room to give the couple some privacy, but shortly after, the man stood and walked out of the room too.
“Orion?” The woman said with confusion.
The man turned and looked at her with concern in his eyes, “You must not tell a single soul about this.” Orion demanded.
“I don't understand. Why not?” she asked with confusion.
“It wouldn't be good for my reputation.” Orion said simply, putting his hat back upon his head.
“Reputation? What are you saying... are you... you're married?” she said with a stunned expression.
“You must not tell anyone about this. Is that understood?” He said in a strong threatening tone.
The woman started to cry and sob. Orion pulled out his wand and points it at the baby, “I said, is that understood, Kathryn?!” he threatened.
“Yes! Just leave!” Kathryn sobbed as she protected her baby.
Orion walked out of the room leaving Kathryn and the baby alone. As he passed the maids and nurses, he stopped, pointed his wand at them and said, “Oblivate!” Erasing all their memories, but only the memories of him.
Kathryn sobbed and she hugged the baby and held him close to her and whispered, “Shh.” as she rocked the baby gently, “Don't worry, Augustus. You will never have to see him ever again. I will protect you.”
FIRST YEAR
Chapter 1
Diagon Alley-1970
Eleven years later in Diagon Alley, a young boy walked down the crowded streets alone. The streets were busy with wizards and witches consisting of adults and children alike. The young boy stopped at a shop with a sign overhead that read, Olivander's Wand Shop and entered inside.
The shop is empty and quiet, except for Olivander, an elderly gentleman standing at the counter. He looked up as he heard the door of his shop close and sees the young boy in front of him.
With a smile, Olivander asked, “Yes, may I help you?”
“I am here to buy a wand.” the young boy said.
“Ah! You've come to the right place then! State your name.”
“Augustus Blair.”
“Ah. Let me see here.”
Olivander walked down an isle and quickly came back with a small rectangular box. He opened it and handed Augustus the wand that was hidden inside it. It’s a light brown wand, Augustus takes it and flicks his wrist, but nothing happened. Augustus placed the wand back inside the box.
“Hmm. Apparently not.” Olivander said with a slight smile.
He covered the box back up and walked back down the isle and quickly came back again. He handed Augustus another wand, this wand is a dark brown almost a scorched blackened color.
“Try this one.” Olivander said, “It’s walnut. It’s twelve and a half inches long and the core is made of a phoenix feather.”
Augustus took the wand. As soon as he did he could feel it’s power flowing through him, almost like they belonged together.
Olivander noticed the look on Augustus's face, “That must be the one. How does it feel?” he asked kindly.
“It feels perfect, how much do I owe you?” Augustus asked, with excitement.
Augustus paid Olivander for his wand and went back outside to the street. He reached into his pocked and pulled out a list with some items scribbled on it. Most of the items are already crossed off, the last thing on his list is an owl.
He shoved the list back into his pant pocket and looked around the street for a shop where he could purchase an owl. He wandered down the street a little ways before he spotted the shop and entered inside, after looking around at all the different animals. He decided on a beautiful barn owl and purchased it. As he left the shop with his owl perched on his shoulder – ignoring the shopkeeper advice of putting the owl in a cage.
“You don't want to be locked up inside a cage, do you Merlin?” Augustus said as he stroked his owl's feathers. “Besides who am I going to talk to if you're locked away in a cage?”
Augustus walked around aimlessly for a while – to kill time before he needed to board the Hogwarts Express. He visited the broom shop and spent a lot of time there. After a few hours of admiring all the different broomsticks, Augustus set forth to Platform 9 ¾ to await the arrival of the Hogwarts Express.
This would be Augustus's first year at Hogwarts, he didn't know anyone and didn't have any friends. This frightened Augustus because of his past childhood - a lot of the other children in the wizarding world mocked him and his mother for reasons he did not understand. At least not until he became eleven of this year when he learned the truth about his birth, he did not become angry with his mother, but at his biological father - he was furious. The Black family was a ruthless family, all of them except for the youngest – Sirius. He was kind to Augustus, but Sirius didn't know of their shared relation and Augustus didn't feel comfortable telling him since he was practically a complete stranger to him.
After watching a few other students run through the wall to reach the platform. Augustus took a deep breath and sprinted at the wall himself. In the blink of an eye – he was on the other side. Augustus boarded the Hogwarts Express. He was sort of a loner and looked around for an empty car until he found one and sat down within it. He threw his bags up on the rack, sat on the bench, and stared out the window. I wish mother could have been here. Augustus wished. His mother, Kathryn Blair died of natural causes soon after telling Augustus the origin of his birth. Augustus thought it may have been a curse that Orion cast upon her when he threatened her not to tell anyone.
A boy, a little bit older than Augustus entered the compartment and sat across from Augustus. He didn't say anything or even make eye contact with Augustus, so Augustus ignored his presence altogether. Then the compartment door opened again and two older students entered inside. A boy and a girl, they both had pure white-blonde hair.
“Leave!” The older boy demanded of the boy across Augustus. The boy shriveled and ran out o the compartment. Augustus looked up at them, but then the boy said in a nicer tone. “You can stay.”
“And what is your name?” The older boy asked Augustus.
“Augustus. Augustus Blair.” Augustus said.
The girl looked up at the mention of his name, “Blair? Now why does that name sound so familiar to me? Have we ever met before?” she asked politely.
“I don't think so. Who are you again?” Augustus asked, a bit annoyed. He really wanted to be alone.
“Oh, forgive us.” The older boy began, “I am Lucius Malfoy and this is Narcissa Black.”
A shot of curiosity shot across Augustus's face, “Black? Are you related to Orion Black?” Augustus asked as kindly as he could without revealing his true intentions for asking.
“Yes, he is my uncle. Do you know him?” Narcissa asked.
“No.” Augustus said quickly, “I've only just heard of his... reputation.” Augustus jabbed, even though no one else in the compartment knew of what he was talking about.
“So now that we are all acquainted, we are from Slytherin. Where do you think you will be placed?” Lucius asked.
“I am not sure.” Augustus said, he had thought a lot about where the sorting hat would place him. His biological father was a Slytherin and his mother was a Ravenclaw. So he figured he would be placed in one of those two houses, but he didn't want to be in Slytherin. His biological father, Orion Black, was a wretched man and the thought of himself being placed in the same house as him, sickened Augustus.
“Well, what houses were your parents?” Narcissa asked.
“Ravenclaw and Slytherin.” Augustus said as if he were still in deep thought and just answered like he were telling them the story that he was thinking in his head.
“Ah, a mix. Well, hopefully you'll end up in Slytherin with us.” Narcissa said with a smile.
Slytherin, I certainly hope not. If I am placed in that horrible house, I won't be like any of them. I'd be different and I wouldn't fit in. I want to be a Ravenclaw like my mother or perhaps even a Gryffindor. But definitely not a Slytherin, Augustus thought to himself.
“He looks like a Slytherin.” Lucius said, “I'm sure he'll end up with us.”
Augustus felt awkward enough in this conversation, so he just let out a fake smile.
Nightfall began to sweep over the sky as the train finally reached its destination at Hogwarts: School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Augustus grabbed his bags and followed the others off the train. A giant man was yelling for all the first years to follow him, but as Augustus was just about to head that direction, Lucius stopped him.
“We'll save you a seat inside.” He said with a devious smile.
“Okay...” Augustus didn't know how to tell him that he really did not want to be a part of Slytherin, so he just gave him a little smile instead.
Augustus followed the other first years to the boats and carried them across the lake to Hogwarts. It was a beautiful sight to behold – the castle at night. All the torches were lit – brightening the path as they walked to the main gate. The giant man, who's name was Hagrid, led them into the castle and into the main hall where everyone was already seated. Four long rectangular tables – one for each house. At the end of the room was another rectangular table where all the professors and the headmaster sat.
Hagrid led them to the front of the room. Ahead of the first years was a stool with an old rugged hat placed on top of it. Another professor, Professor McGonagal, stepped up to them and introduced herself.
“When I call your name, you will sit on the stool and I will place the sorting hat on your head. And you will be placed into your houses.” Professor McGonagal explained.
After calling out names in no particular order, she finally called Augustus. He walked and sat down on the stool and the sorting hat was placed on his head.
“Hmm... a mix of two houses, interesting. Where should I place you. I see a bright future for you, but a mixture of a dark past as well. Darkness dwells within you, but a force of greatness is shining through. Hmm..” The sorting hat began, “How about... Gryffindor!”
Augustus let out a sigh of relief as he stepped down and sat at the Gryffindor table. He noticed Lucius Malfoy shaking his head as he sat down. I don't care what he thinks, I despise all Slytherins. And I'm quite pleased with the house I will settle in. Augustus thought to himself.
After the sorting hat sorted all the students, the headmaster, Professor Dumbledore, gave a welcoming speech. Soon after, they all dined for the start of the new year. Augustus had never eaten so much in his life, he was quite satisfied. When he had finished eating, he followed the rest of his house to their dormitory, but professor McGonagal stopped him.
“Augustus, professor Dumbledore would like to speak to you in his office.” she said politely.
“Okay.” Augustus responded, not entirely sure what he would want to speak to him about, but he followed Professor McGonagal to the headmaster's office. She opened the door for him and he sat down on a chair in front of the desk and awaited Professor Dumbledore.
“Ah, Augustus.” Professor Dumbledore said from behind him.
“You wanted to see me, professor?” Augustus asked.
“Yes. I am aware of your situation and I want to assure you that you are quite safe here.” Dumbledore explained.
“I don't understand, sir. Am I in some kind of danger?” Augustus asked.
“There are certain students who might not be so thrilled to have you here.”
“I think I may have met some of them on the train... Do they know?”
“I believe they do. No matter, you are safe here, Augustus.”
“Wait, how do they know? My mother told me that Orion threatened her not to tell anyone.” Augustus said more than he wanted, but nonetheless, he had to say it.
“Calm yourself. A few months ago, there was a incident where Orion may have become drugged to the point where he was spilling secrets. And you were one of the secrets that he let slip.”
“So all the Blacks know the truth?”
“I believe they do. And I'm sure some of the others do as well.”
“What will they try to do to me?” Augustus asked, not wanting to know the answer.
“The best thing you can do, is to make friends and enjoy your life here at Hogwarts. I will handle the rest.” Dumbledore said with a sincere smile, “Professor McGonagal will direct you to your dormitory.”
Augustus started to walk out, but turned before leaving the office. “Professor? Who else knows?”
“Myself and Professor McGonagal. Have a good night, Augustus.”
“Goodnight, professor.”
